7/19/10 Race Report: Breckenridge 100

Time again for my hometown race the Breckenridge 100. Arguably the hardest 100 mile race in the NUE series if not the country. The 4am wakeup call was very early, by the start of the race at 6am the sun was starting to show on the climb to come.

The pace was hard from the start and I began trading pulls with Jeff Schalk, Joey Thompson and one other rider who was in tow. By the time we hit the first single track after 50 minutes of climbing Jeff had about 10 seconds on me and Joey was behind by about the same. After cresting the ridge of the Ten Mile range we started the long decent down to Copper Mountain. Then around the corner Jeff was off his bike I asked if he was OK and he said he had a flat so I continued on alone.

I came in off the first lap with a good lead on now second place rider Joey Thompson and started in on lap two I was feeling really good at this point and was really pushing, about half way through the lap on an old mining flume I got a huge nail through my tire, with a gaping hole in my tire I had to stop a throw a tube in loosing about 3 or 4 minutes. I figured Jeff would catch me now that we had both had flats but what I didn't realize was he had 2 flats and had lost about 20 minutes and it was Joey that was in chase.

At the end of the Colorado Trail section of the course I got a good view behind me and could see a rider about 2 minutes behind, it turned out to be Joey but I new I had to push hard into the third lap because of the time I had lost. By the middle of lap three I had about 6 minutes on Joey and was pushing hard just in case something happened. I came in with a time of 8:23 and the win making it 6 in a row, I really can't believe I have won this race 6 times I feel really lucky and blessed to have stayed healthy for this long and I will keep at it for as long as I can!

From the official TriSports.com blog: "I was absolutely blown away – not only did I not get hungry, I didn’t cramp either (typically on a ride like this I would need to supplement with salt pills). This product is the real deal and I recommend it to anyone not in my age-group." Don't stop reading now, folks... jump over to TriSports' blog for the rest of this story and plenty of other great triathlon product reviews and information.

Hi INFINIT!

I just wanted to take a few minutes to let you know how pleased I have been with infinit! I’ve been using my formulas since November of last year and I love it!

So far, 2010 has been a great year for me with regards to the results I’ve posted in the two triathlons I’ve done. I give a ton of credit to infinit. I raced the Turtle Crawl Olympic Distance triathlon back in May and ended up first in my age group (Female 35 – 39)! I was thrilled! I ran with my bottle of infinit on the run. I only used the water on the course to pour over my head to keep cool.

I raced the Kansas 70.3 in June and set a PR of 6:03. This was 21 minutes faster than my old PR. I’ve been competing in triathlons, mostly for fun, since 2003. I really wanted to take it up a notch this year, which is why I took the plunge with infinit! It has been a huge help! I love the taste! I don’t have to worry about supplementing it with anything else! It is just so easy!

Big props go to Michael! I did a phone consultation with him back in February when I started doing longer workouts for my 70.3. He answered all my questions and really helped me understand what I needed for my short and long workouts. He even gave me an excellent race strategy for my 70.3. It worked like a charm! I felt energized and hydrated throughout the race. I didn’t experience any of the GI issues I’ve had in the past.

I’m so pleased with my results and I just wanted to say “thanks”! Next race: USAT Age Group National Championship Race in Tuscaloosa, AL on Saturday, September 25th! Wish me luck!

Two quick notes: 1.) I gave a big “shout out” to our club members (Peachtree Tri Club) after our Partnership was announced. 2.) I recommend infinit to all the athletes that I coach. Thanks for the discount codes!

Sincerely,
Mari Fridenmaker

MultiSport Canada - Welland Race Update

Hey Team,
Just got back from Welland for the MultiSport Canada Triathlon weekend. Once again a series of great races over the two days. John and the MSC Team continue to create an environment that caters to all levels of athletes. The weekend was full of great performances on the flat and fast course, along with incredible stories - the most impressive involving Nigel Gray from the Toronto area.

A friend of mine went down hard today on the bike course - Rich Pady was I believe running in 3rd overall with Nigel 20 seconds back. Rich was clipped by the mirror of an oncoming van, as it came across the center line of the road. The hit was powerful and fractured Rich's humerus, when he hit the ground he was subjected to the normal road rash that in-sues when traveling at ~40 km/h. In a self-less and classy act Nigel a local pro - stopped immediately and tended to Rich for several minutes until the ambulance came to take over, not worried a bit about his race. Awesome. This is obviously a big blow to Rich's season-he is incredible shape coming off a huge year last year which included winning the overall title last year at the Triple T. Off for a while now, but he will definitely back.

The podium of today's Half was filled with stellar performance Healthy Results (Rich Pady - Coach) trained Deborah Powell first amongst the women with a 4:47:18. Wolfgang Guembel finished in a blistering 3:56:49 to lead the men, with a 2:09 bike split (41.8 km/h)- Wow.

Had the pleasure of meeting Gord Pauls who is in his final preparations for a Triple Ironman. Gord is completing 3 Ironmans in 3 days at Ironman Canada in August. Hear more and find out how you can help:

Another bright spot was Robbie Chapman, age 16 of Lancaster who finished his very first Half Ironman in 4:55. Previously Rob had only completed one Olympic-strong kid with lots of discipline, future looks bright.

Hear what they are saying:

That's all for now, will see you in Gravenhurst in 3 weeks!! Thanks for a great weekend. Remember if the Run and Ride formulations are not hitting the mark-let us customize to make it make your specific needs and flavour preferences.

How to Calculate Your Sweat Rate

The goal is to see exactly how much dehydration you incur during your workout and in turn, determine your hourly fluid replacement (how much you need to drink). When you are done with this homework, you will have a hydration target that you can use in both training and racing.

1. Empty you bladder and record you weight (nude or swim suit)

2. Pre-exercise weight = ___________ lbs.(A)

3. Do your usual workout, and drink like you normally would.

4. Record the approximate volume of fluid consumed during exercise.

How much you drank = ___________ fluid ounces (E)

5. Towel dry, empty your bladder and then record your weight (nude or swim suit).

Post-exercise weight = ___________ lbs.(B)

6. Subtract your post-exercise weight from your pre-exercise weight to get the number of pounds you lost during exercise.

Weight lost = _____lbs.(A) - ______lbs(B) = ________lbs.(C)

7. To find out how many fluid ounces of water you have lost,

multiply pounds x 16 _____lbs(C) x 16 = ________ fluid ounces of water you lost during exercise (D)

8. To determine hourly fluid replacement needs, add number of fluid ounces you lost during exercise (D) to the number of fluid ounces you consumed during exercise (E) and divide by total number of hours spent training.

(_____fluid ounces (D) + ___fluid ounces (E)) ÷ ___hours =_____fluid ounces needed each hour

Conditions that will increase sweat rate include heat, humidity, and elevated heart rate (high intensity training). Athletes should measure sweat rate across several workouts to determine their fluid replacement needs in various environmental conditions.

On race day, based on the forecast, the athlete than can go back to their log and know exactly what fluid they need to plan on ingesting to prevent performance declines associated with dehydration. Deaths have occurred when the air temperature was less than 75 degrees F (24 degrees C) but the relative humidity was above 95%. Humidity levels over 75% will contribute to an increased risk of heat injury.

*Note that a factor of 1.2-1.6 can be multiplied to hourly replacement needs when heat & humidity (>75%) are extreme.

This is a key component to any athletes performance.
